Once the artist has selected the strongest version, the AI track can become a detailed reference for the studio.

  • the instrumentation;

  • the parts that should be kept, changed or removed.

But it should not automatically be treated as the final vocal.

In the studio, a vocal producer can adapt the melody to the artist’s actual range and tone. Some notes may need to be lowered, some phrases may need more space to breathe, and some words may need to be rewritten so that they feel natural when sung by a real person.

The vocalist can then bring elements that are difficult to specify through a prompt: tension, restraint, vulnerability, aggression, intimacy and personal interpretation.

Professional recording also provides much more control. The team can record harmonies, doubles, ad-libs and alternative takes separately. Perhaps the drums have the right energy but lack definition. The synthesiser texture may be interesting but too dense around the vocal. The bass may sound powerful on headphones but become unclear on larger speakers. Transitions may feel abrupt, and individual instruments may not have enough space.

A studio producer can preserve the musical identity of the reference while rebuilding these elements more deliberately.

The drums can be reprogrammed with stronger transients. The bass can be adjusted to work with the kick. The chord voicings can be changed to leave more space for the singer. Live guitar, piano, percussion or strings can be recorded where the song would benefit from a more natural performance.

This is where the combination of AI and professional production becomes especially efficient. The studio team is not starting from an empty session. The artist has already communicated the desired direction through a detailed audio reference. The producer can therefore spend less time guessing what the artist means and more time improving the idea.

Why Suno Stems Are Helpful but Not the Same as Original Multitracks

Suno can separate a track into multiple stems, including vocals, drums, bass, guitars and other instrument groups. Its current advanced separation tools can produce up to 12 stems, depending on the plan and selected mode.

These files can be useful for muting an element, extracting a vocal reference or transferring parts of the track into another session.

However, separated stems are not the same as the original multitrack recordings used to create a traditional production.

They are extracted from an already combined audio mix. As a result, one stem may still contain traces of another instrument. Reverb may appear across several files. Cymbals can leak into the vocal stem, and the separation process may soften transients or introduce metallic and watery artefacts.

A professional producer may use these stems as references or temporary building blocks, but recreate important elements when greater sound quality and control are required.

The Technical Limitations of an AI-Generated Song

The main technical limitation of Suno is not simply that it lacks human emotion. It is that the generated audio is more difficult to control precisely.

A traditional studio production contains separate recordings, MIDI parts, plugin settings, automation, effects returns and editable performances. Every note, sound and level can be adjusted independently.

A standard Suno generation is delivered as a combined audio file. Suno explains that changing the voice or lyrics may require regeneration, stem extraction or further editing rather than simply opening the original vocal track and changing one line.

This creates several practical limitations.

A regenerated chorus may have a slightly different singer, ambience or instrumental balance. Correcting one mispronounced word may affect the melody around it. An instrument that sounds good in one section may change character in the next. The generated mix may also be heavily processed, leaving limited headroom for professional mixing and mastering.

AI-generated vocals can occasionally mispronounce words, place stress on the wrong syllables or deliver phrasing that would be uncomfortable for a real singer. The arrangement may contain transitions that sound convincing initially but do not connect naturally when examined closely.

These problems do not make the technology useless. They simply indicate where professional production becomes valuable.

Stage Six: Professional Mixing and Mastering

Even when much of the AI-generated material is retained, professional mixing can make the result more controlled and consistent.

A mixing engineer can improve the balance between the vocal and instrumental, control harsh frequencies, strengthen the low end, refine the stereo image and create clearer differences between verses, choruses and bridges.

However, mixing cannot completely repair every problem contained in an AI-generated stereo file. When all elements are already combined, the engineer cannot adjust the kick, vocal and synthesiser with the same accuracy available in a full multitrack session.

That is why the decision to rebuild, partially replace or retain the AI production should ideally be made before the final mix.

Mastering then prepares the completed song for distribution by controlling overall loudness, tonal balance, dynamics and translation across different playback systems. It is the final technical stage, not a substitute for production or mixing.

Rights and Commercial Release Considerations

Artists should also review the terms of the AI platform before releasing generated music commercially.

Suno currently states that songs created while subscribed to its paid Pro or Premier plans can receive commercial-use rights, subject to its terms. Generations made through the free Basic tier are intended for non-commercial use. Suno also distinguishes between being permitted to use an output commercially and whether the work qualifies for copyright protection under applicable law.

Artists should only upload material they have the right to use and should avoid prompting the system to copy a protected song, performer or voice.

For important commercial releases, it is sensible to keep records of the original lyrics, recordings, production changes and human contributions made during the studio process.

There will continue to be debate about AI music. Some artists will embrace it, while others will prefer not to use it at all.
